God did not give me any daughters
He gave me boys
His interesting choice
I grew with sisters
And mom alone
No boys or men
In my childhood home
But God always knows
And has a plan
Even when we don’t
Understand
But I never regretted
Not having girls
My boys were everything
Filled my world
With fun and farts
And snot and jokes
And pushing, shoving
Bossy blokes
Tents, and swords and
Hey, that’s my guy
Mom, don’t forget
To bring my “guys”
And sports and dirt
And slime and mud
I loved it all
Get in the sludge
The teens
Oh geez
Hey mom, stay in the car
Those pants are gross
And don’t kiss me
Where’s my stuff
I’m late
Bye
College
Apply
Apply
And fill the form
Fill the dorm
Then empty out
The beer and girls
Back home
At 21
But independent
Ok it’s fine with me
But not with them
Freedom calling
Flee
And then the crash
Of boys vs girls
For when boys leave
To begin their own world
Unlike girls, they forget their mom
They never call
Stop by
Just gone
My nest is big
But is it empty
My heart is full
I’ve love aplenty
But no one’s here
To receive it
And my heart
Still can’t believe it
My head says
This is the natural progress of things
But no call or message? For weeks and months?
Yes, no clipped wings
And so they leave
And it is true
A girl is a daughter all her life
A son is yours
Til he takes a wife
Remember this
For your own sake
Give your children all your love
But be prepared to break
