Gracie

Gracie waits for me at home
Whenever I take to the road and roam
Errands, chores, adventuring
Sometimes just an hour
Sometimes it’s days
And the walker comes in

Gracie’s 5
And 80 lbs
She’s my girl
My very best friend
She greets me each and every time
I come home from any chore
By leaping up several feet up from the floor
To lick my face
And say “hello”
Her way of asking
Where did you go

I give her treats
The very best
I don’t hold back
Here, take the rest

I let her swim in my big pool
She dives right in
A happy fool
She’ll swim for hours
If I’d let her
But that’s not good
I know better
I dry her off
She shakes her skin
The water sprinkles
Sprays me like I went in

I dry her off
She loves the towel
Rubbing into it
A yummy howl

I spend most days
At home alone
With my Gracie
At my side
She’s a silly girl
Follows me all day
From room to room
What am I doing today
Gracie, I’m putting away laundry and washing dishes
I’ll sit with you soon
Give rubs and kisses

Gracie has a big, soft bed
Where she never lays her head
No, she’s with me always either on the couch
Watching tv or reading
She’s in my bed
And she’s a hog
She doesn’t budge
And lays on my legs
I can’t move the blanket
It’s the price I pay
Pay it up, I gladly do
I’d rather have her warmth and breath

She listens well
I’ve trained her too
And so I walk her down my streets
Every day, without a leash
Others pass, with barking dogs
Gracie looks but stays assured
She knows she is not allowed to go
To cross the street or say hello
Unless I bring her over there
But yes, the people stop and stare

Ring goes the doorbell
Bark bark bark bark
Loud and scary
Fierce and dark
She always gets a reward for barking
For protecting Mommy

Oh boy, but when I open the door
Gracie changes
Hey, come in
Yes you
Rub me more
Do you want to steal or rob?
It’s ok
But rub my knob

Once upon a morning walk
We came upon a fawn
Gracie and the fawn just stopped
Stared at each other cold
For minutes the three of us stood there
And I realized the confusion
Either Gracie or the fawn or both
Did not know the illusion
Is that you? Is that me?
They both looked so much alike
At the moment Gracie moved, the fawn bolted for a hike

I have a family
Sons and hubby
They all love Gracie too
But even when they are home
If I go out she’s blue
She sits up on the front window ledge
She’ll sit there and wait for hours
Waiting for her Mom
To cover in love showers

Gracie Rose is her name
For grace brought her to me
Rose is for my grandma, the one who always loved me
She’s my girl and if I could
I would also leap
When I come and I see her
For I’m just as full with gleeimage
