Catching Sand

Friends

57
My friend is 58
I’ve known Anna since I was 14
….took refuge in her house when my mother’s boyfriend assaulted and tried to rape me
Poor like me
Ashamed like me
Just a girl like me
We were good friends
Just teenagers growing up together
Playing the same stupid pop song 100 times
Trying beauty tricks; she ironed my hair and burnt my head
We laughed hysterically.
We were just happy to be friends so we laughed together
when things were bad
I woke up groggy one day sleeping over her house during high school
And brushed my teeth with her mother’s preparation H.
We peed ourselves

I went into foster care when my mother died
We lost each other

For
39
Years

…..then I just searched for her on Facebook one day. There she was! I contacted her….she wasn’t sure who I was….but after some testing, we immediately fell into place talking daily and soon met in Central Park 6 years ago.

5 years ago she was diagnosed with Lupus. She’s become swollen and bent with arthritis and often cannot walk a block. Her hair is falling out. She has fibromyalgia. Emphysema. All due to the auto-immune of Lupus.

I enjoy every moment with her. I’m happy to have few friends. I expect a lot of trust. I pray for her health. She’s vibrant and she worries about being in a wheelchair.

God Bless Us

  2. How wonderful to re-connect with someone you were close with growing up . . . . I’ll bet you shed quite a few tears and hugged tightly to ensure each this was not a dream, not a mirage. Then to find out her health was failing shortly after re-uniting must have been devastating to each of you . . . . I am sure the irony of it all was finding each other after almost four decades was a miracle . . . . made that way by a power on a higher plane that we cannot comprehend . . . . but meant so much to each of you. . . . . . God bless and Godspeed to each of you. . . I will say a prayer for your friend. Thanks for sharing this with a complete stranger like myself.
