A Moment In Time
In 1976 the USA celebrated its bicentennial of independence. In July of that year, there was a fantastic international event celebrating with America; it was called OpSail. OpSail was an event wherein ships from all over the world came to New York City’s ports to celebrate and commemorate America’s 200 years of independence.
In 1976, New York City was a very different place than it is now. Hookers still walked the streets of 42nd Street and XXXX movie theatres were lined up one next to another along 42nd St. with sex shops offering live shows. It’s nothing like that today. The hookers are still around but they are craftier and harder to find; definitely out of the public/tourists eye.
I bought this photo from a man in my town who was a photographer for Time Magazine. He took this shot on his own time, so it did not belong to the magazine but was his. We are Facebook friends; when I saw the photo, I had to have it! It was a moment in time that is memorable….history of the US, history of former NYC. I contacted him, and he happily sold it to me for $200.
I love the bravado, self-assurance and pleasure shown on this hooker’s face. She is in her element. The photo was taken on 42nd Street; she was posing for some sailors from the Amerigo Vespucci ship that was in for OpSail from Italy. I love how the sailor relaxes back and checks her out.
I love NYC. I am a proud American. I love all of the moments.
This is not the picture…..I’m having trouble uploading it…..I’ll work on it 🙂
